When most people find a gem like Artisteer, they want to keep it quiet. I must admit that might have been my first inclination. Why would I want my competition to know about software that makes it easy to design a site without the need to know html, css, or php? The answer is that it’s good Karma to pass on any information that has significantly helped you on your road to success. And that is exactly what I’m about to do here.
Artisteer claims that now, to build basic, clean and customized websites, you don’t need any other software such as Adobe Photoshop or Dreamweaver. They also claim you don’t need to know any html, css, php or any other scripting language. Remarkably, this is all true. It may be this fact that has veteran web designers and developers worried, but as a web designer and developer, I can honestly say there is nothing to worry about. Artisteer is for the Novice and Professional alike. In fact, if you DO have the other professional tools, and have a solid knowledge of CSS, and HTML you can quickly find yourself dominating the market of web design by adding Artisteer to your arsenal.
On each one of my web projects, without exception, I use a dynamic combination of the CS3 versions of Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver with Artisteer at the heart of the operation. As a matter of fact, Artisteer has become the MVP on my web design team. I am now able to offer my services to clients looking for static HTML websites, blog sites like WordPress or Blogger, or content management systems like Joomla!, and Drupal.
When you’re looking for web design ideas, Artisteer goes above and beyond in offering you suggestions. You can browse several layout ideas with a click of a button, which helps in the visualization process, and figuring out where graphics and content will go. Artisteer breaks down the process of web site design into 10 sections: Colors & Fonts, Layout, Background, Sheet, Header, Menu, Articles, Blocks, Buttons, and Footer.
I hardly ever use the Color chooser and that’s because I usually have a company logo or graphic idea to sample colors from. However, it is a good place to start to stimulate the creative side of your brain with splashes of color that vary from template to template. You can also set the default font type and size here.
Personally, the first place I like to start is in the Layout Section. This is where you can decide whether or not you want to use a header, and if it will appear above or below your website’s main menu. You can also choose whether your site will have 1, 2, or 3 columns and specify their widths. To add more flexibility to your design you can also choose to not have a header or a drop down menu. Usually in these cases you would most likely have a menu placed somewhere else in your template, like the left or right module positions.
Next you can choose the settings for the background of your site. You can choose a solid color, a gradient or any of Artisteer’s stock background textures, images and glare effects. You can also import your own graphics from your computer into the background.
Once you’ve set the background you can begin to style the sheet. The sheet is the part of your website that encases all of your content and sits on top of the background that you have designed. Under the “sheet” tab you will find options to set the width of your website, the offset the sheet from the top of the page, add a border, a drop shadow, or change the radius of the sheet to produce rounded corners. You can even choose to add different degrees of transparency to the style of your sheet.
Creating a header for your website has never been easier or more versatile. From this one section you can choose the height of your header (the width will be the same as your sheet). The Artisteer download comes with stock background images or you can import your own image. Here’s where Artisteer starts to really show off with the option to import a foreground photo. The Artisteer download also comes with stock photos from a variety of themes, but this is where owning the other Professional tools, like Photoshop, comes in handy. I create a lot of .PNG graphics using Photoshop, which allows for seamless integration by having a transparent background. Lastly in the header section you can set the Headline tag and slogan for the header and customize the position, color, font & size of the text. You also have these options available on the footer section.
In 2000 B.A. (Before Artisteer), if you wanted a dynamic drop down menu, you had to either know flash or be advanced user in Dreamweaver. What Artisteer has created is like nothing I’ve seen before. You have multiple choices of gradients, shapes, textures, and colors. Hit the “Suggest Menu” button a couple of times to see what I’m talking about.
Consistency is King with Artisteer. When you create new content for your website you can easily style the Heading fonts and colors, paragraph text, table styles, bullet points, and buttons, all within the same window.
Even though you see no code at all during the process of building a website through Artisteer, the software is made to automatically generate the HTML and CSS for your website. So it will be beneficial for you to familiarize yourself with basic CSS and HTML practices. For those professionals out there who DO know the language, then Artisteer will cut out a chunk of time in your workflow, and provide a place for you to create endless possibilities for customizing the most popular website platforms out there.
