Can unexpected pregnancy ruin Jane the Virgin’s life?
Unexpected pregnancy can turn the world upside down, especially, when the woman in question has never had sex. Bewildered? Well, so was Jane Villanueva, who discovered she was pregnant despite being a virgin! The American romantic comedy-drama series “Jane The Virgin” revolves around the life of Jane, who one day is just a normal young adult, and the next day she’s been artificially inseminated by a doctor, who gets her procedures mixed up. Jane herself is a college student, and working as a waitress to make ends meet, and has plans to become a writer.
Created by Jennie Snyder Urman, the show premiered on October 13, 2014 on The CW. It is adapted from the Juana la Virgen, a Venezuelan telenovela created by Perla Farias. The program showcases all the commonly used plots and twists, characteristic of Latin telenovelas. The series has been welcomed enthusiastically by the critics since its premiere. At the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, it was nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, while Gina Rodriguez won the award for Best Actress – Television Series, Musical or Comedy. Other than this, the series also received the Peabody Award and an AFI Award, and has been nominated for Critics’ Choice Awards, as well as TCA awards.
The series expresses the surprising and unexpected events that happen in the life of Jane Villanueva, a hardworking, young Latina woman living in Miami. She is a god-fearing person, who has taken a vow to protect her virginity, until she marries her detective fiancé, is broken. She is mistakenly artificially inseminated during a routine checkup. If it wasn’t already enough, the situation gets worse, when the biological father turns out to be a married man and a former playboy, on whom she used to have a crush. He is also a cancer survivor who not only owns the hotel Jane is working at, but was also Jane’s adolescent crush.
Gina Rodriguez is cast as the main protagonist, Jane Gloriana Villanueva. After meeting the biological father of the child, Rafael and hearing his situation, she agrees to give birth to the child and turn over the custody of the child to Rafael and his wife Petra, but only after making sure the safety and love of the child. But, with the growing pregnancy, the feelings in between them also bloom. According to the producer Gina Rodriguez was “literally the third person” that came during casting.
Jane is a young woman who decided to keep her virginity intact due to her moral values. She is not socially awkward or uncomfortable, although she would never accept it herself. She is certainly not immune to any sexual attractions or temptations. She is intelligent, beautiful and also normal – three of the characteristics which are very rarely connected to a virgin in a television show or movie.
Jane also more or less prefers to use God’s name as a petition than a swear word. “God has a plan”, which is not so surprisingly supported by her grandmother, Alba. And while people do make
a lot of mistakes in this TV series, a lot of them are trying to do something good and not for their own selfish reasons, but for the sake of others too.
Andrea Navedo portrayed the role of Xiomara Gloriana Villanueva, Jane’s mother. She had Jane at a young age of sixteen, which is mainly the reason behind Jane’s resolution of being a virgin until marriage. Justin Baldoni plays Rafael Solano, a hotel owner. He is the accidental biological father of Jane’s yet to be born baby. His relationship with his wife is in shambles and no more loves her. As the series flows, he decides to divorce Petra because of his feelings for Jane, as he comes to know that his wife is involved in an extra-marital affair.
Brett Dier portrays Michael Cordero, Jane’s 29-year-old ex-fiance and detective. He is well aware of Petra’s love affair and uses that to blackmail her. He wants Petra’s wedding to not fall apart, so that Jane gives the child to them after the birth. He also dislikes Rafael due to his and Jane’s increasing closeness. Yael Grobglas plays the role of Petra Solano, Rafael’s wife who only got married to him in order to steal his money. She plays the role of an antagonist in the series. Ivonne Coll plays Alba Gloriana Villanueva, Jane’s virtuous maternal grandmother. Being highly religious, she encourages Jane to remain a virgin up until her marriage. She is not able to speak in English, but she understands it perfectly well.
The show has come as a refreshing change to the usual soap operas on American television. The creators have done a marvelous job here. The somewhat far-fetched premise is partially based on the Latin American telenovela, which makes it an unusual find on the mainstream American Television. With the complicated character relationships and plot twists, plus plenty of deceit and manipulation, it is interesting to find this often heartwarming drama-comedy on primetime TV.
It’s certainly the only show, streaming right now, that requires a full-time narrator just to keep all the plot strands straight. It’s silly, salacious and proud to be so. Characters move in and out of bed without batting an eyelid. Most of the characters have some sort of horrific secret that they are dying to share with the audiences, while simultaneously terrible news and deaths lurks around every corner.
And yet “Jane the Virgin” as a complete show, like its main protagonist, is sweet, well-meaning and surprisingly pure. Perhaps the word “pure” may not be very appropriate to use in here. The show is not shy about certain content that it showcases. Despite all its issues, there are still some factors present that add to the appeal of the show. These are the ones that make the audiences come back for more.
As for the further long-range-plans of CW’s for these series, there may be some bigger mysteries and treasures for Jane in her journey. God’s plan for Jane will certainly be a more sordid one. Just hop over here and find out how to watch this an other great television shows anywhere you go.
